Municipal CasesSome criminal cases are charged and tried in municipal courts instead of the county and district courts. For example, Lakewood has its own municipal court, as do Denver, Westminster, Commerce City, Sheridan and other cities. Municipal courts do not hear felony cases. Municipal courts typically hear municipal ordinance violations and traffic cases, and also sometimes hear cases that could otherwise be charged as misdemeanors. Each city has unique ordinances and laws, unlike the uniform state law applicable to felonies and misdemeanors. If a person is convicted in a municipal court case, he or she faces jail time, fines and other consequences. Because of the unique nature of municipal court law, it is important to have an attorney to assist you through the process. The most common cases heard in municipal courts are traffic violations, assault, disorderly conduct, interference, leash law cases, noise ordinance violations, and a myriad of other municipal law violations. |
